How to Apply for a Learner Licence Online on Sarathi (2026, Step by Step)

You can apply for a learner licence from your phone or computer on the Sarathi Parivahan portal. The steps below are the common flow; a few states add or skip a step, and Sarathi shows the exact options for your state.

Before you start

Step-by-step on Sarathi

  1. Open sarathi.parivahan.gov.in (or parivahan.gov.in → Online Services → Driving Licence Related Services) and select your state.
  2. Click Apply for Learner Licence. Read the instructions and click Continue.
  3. Choose how you will verify: Aadhaar authentication (e-KYC) lets many states give the test online from home; without Aadhaar you submit documents and take the test at the RTO.
  4. Fill in the application: name, date of birth, address, RTO, vehicle class and the self-declaration of physical fitness (Form 1). A medical certificate (Form 1A) is needed for transport vehicles and older applicants.
  5. Upload the documents, photo and signature.
  6. Pay the fee online: ₹150 for the learner licence plus ₹50 for the test (central rates; some states add a service charge). Save the receipt and application number.
  7. Take the test. Online: you get a link and a time window to take the 15-question test on your own device with your camera on. At the RTO: book a slot and take it on a computer there.
  8. Pass with 9 or more correct answers and your learner licence is generated. Download or print it from Sarathi (Print Learner Licence).

After you pass

Your learner licence is valid for 6 months. Display an "L" plate, drive only with a licensed driver beside you, and apply for the permanent driving licence after 30 days (and before the learner licence expires). If you fail, you can retake the test after the waiting period your state applies, usually a few days, by paying the ₹50 test fee again.

Prepare first

Most people who fail simply did not practise the road signs. Take a few timed rounds of the free LLR mock test and read the road signs guide before your test window.
